Knowing today that there is a solid link between dental care and heart health, many people want their family members and friends to start seeing a dentist regularly. It should be no different, in their minds, than undergoing regular physicals from the doctor. But many people hate dentists, and if you can get them to admit it, many people are terrified of dentists. So they completely avoid regular dentist visits because the dentist might find a cavity and want to fix it, or they have a known problem but choose to live in pain instead of having it fixed by the dentist. So the critical question then becomes how to get your husband, wife, adult child, parent, or friend to go see a dentist and get over the fear. Giving a gift certificate may provide the motivation a person needs to go see a dentist. When you ask your dentist about gift certificates (many of them already have a system like that in place), ask for some information to include about modern dentistry that can help explain that things aren't the same today as they were previously. It certainly may nullify the excuse that they can't afford it. Clarify to them that today's anesthetics, procedures, and atmosphere are much more patient-centered than they used to be. Dentists understand they have a stigma to overcome, and many go out of their way to make the patient comfortable in the chair.
Even if the recipient is not up for a regular dental exam, it may provide the seed money for them to talk to a dentist about cosmetic dentistry. Maybe they've always wanted whiter teeth, or straighter teeth, or a gap filled in. By getting the person there to talk to the dentist about something they do want done, it will show them that dentistry isn't the same today. It may open their minds to the possibility of getting a checkup while they're seeing the dentist. They'll require one anyway if they want their teeth whitened or an implant installed. Do anything you can to get the people you care about to start seeing a dentist. Their physical health depends on it as much as their oral health.
